My Football Journey
I love football and want to play the sport, but our school district doesn’t have a football team, and my dad doesn’t want me playing on a club squad. In the fall of 2024, my dad, a former football coach, suggested I try place kicking after noticing an increase in my leg strength and soccer passing accuracy. We initially used a soccer goal to simulate the height of lineman at the LOS, and after reviewing alignment, approach, kick and follow through procedures, I kicked a ton of PAT’s and field goals at memorial field through the club team’s goal.
I decided to begin transitioning from a soccer defender to a place kicker in May of 2025. So, I started my post track season football training on 25MAY25. I have been place kicking now for a total of 10 weeks as of 19JUL25; 3 weeks in the fall of 2024 and 7 weeks so far this summer and have kicked over 1,000 times in practice at Gaydo Field without goal posts [I use cones as markers on the ground 6 yards apart, see the video]. Also, the parks and recs department have not put up the city’s club football teams goal posts at memorial field as of 14AUG25. Update 24NOV25: 1) Since the end of July, I have kicked 2 sessions per week 75 kicks per session (including dry kicks and punts) for a total of about 3,600 kicks. 2) My current kicking stats are: –Place kicking (off the ground): 100% PATs and 80% FGs from 40 yards. If my legs are rested, I do average about 40% FGs when kicking from 50 yards. –Kick-off (using a one-inch tee): 50 yards or more consistently. –Onside kick (using a one-inch tee): 100% kick 10 yards at about a 30-35 degree angle with a moderate finishing bounce. –Punting: Punting is my weakest skillset, but since WPIs FB training camp I have been slowly making progress on both distance and hangtime [70% 40 yards/3 sec]. 3) Like my weightlifting and throwing regimen, kicking has now become a yearlong process. I am asked by coaches at camps where I learned to place kick footballs and the answer is 12 years of soccer, youtube’s Caden Novikoff and my dad. Please scroll to the page bottom for an update on my training with Coach Sam Lenson.
I have attended the following football prospect camps the summer of 2025 and several coaches are interested in my place-kicking ability!
St Anselm 19JUL25
I have also been learning the “Fullback” position with my dad and was able to train with the running backs at camp in addition to kicking. —[See me run, juke a defender and switch the ball from right to left hand in the St. Anselm video (Juke #2).] —[See me kick a FG for the first time under crowd pressure in the St. Anselm video.] I’d like to thank God, the St. Anselm coaching staff and all campers for helping me become a better football player today!
Middlebury 26JUL25
My dad and I toured the campus this morning before camp, super nice. The tour was led by football players and lasted about an hour. We enjoyed learning about the school and talking with the players. Right after the tour I checked in for kicking camp and met with Middlebury’s Kicker Tony Wang. Later, we were joined on the field by HFC Mandigo. I was talking with HFC Mandigo while kicking and he informed me his offense does not use fullbacks, so after kicking, I worked out today with the slot backs. I’m not a receiver but I did catch a few and learned many new pass routes. I’d like to thank God, the Middlebury coaching staff/players and all campers for helping me become a better football player today!
WPI 27JUL25
I was greeted by STC Holmes just before checking in and we had a quick talk. Right after I checked in for camp I went out and stretched and warmed up with a few PATs. After group warm-ups and a series of competitive agility drills, we were broken off into groups. I was joined on the field by STC Holmes and he immediately begin punt training, as I’m not a punter. After an hour or so I was taking long snaps and punting to returners for the first time, thank you Coach Holmes! After my kicking session ended, STC Holmes had QB Douglas George escort me and my dad on a tour of the campus. I liked how everything was in easy walking distance [classrooms, housing, dining and athletic facilities] as compared to a more rural setting. The tour lasted about 45 minutes. I enjoyed learning about the school and talking with Douglas. I’d like to thank God, the WPI coaching staff/players and all campers for helping me become a better football player today!
Nichols 31JUL25
We departed for the 450-mile roundtrip to Nichols at 5:30am. Camp registration wasn’t until 1:00pm but we wanted to leave early to take the campus tour at 10:00am. On 495 South near Tewksbury MA, we had a steering tire blowout, pop swapped in the spare, the spares wheel rim contacted the brakes and prevented their proper operation. We found a local tire shop and purchased new tires but had to cancel the campus tour. We made it to check in ok. I went out and stretched and warmed up a bit. [It should be noted that early on I pulled a muscle in my lower back, I don’t remember how, and I took two tylenol and fought through the pain to finish the camp.] After group warm-ups and a pro-combine session, we broke up into our training groups, mine was RBs and LBs. Our coaches were DC Brinson and RBC Fullilove. We then went to different stations for agility drills, and finally did RB drills. Before each agility drill, or position specific drill, the coaches explained how they wanted us to perform. They also gave us constant feedback and pointers during the drills. Special teams were assembled next, and I did well place kicking. HFC Marino evaluated me right there on the field and unlike the NESCAC schools [and those like them], we were able to discuss my future plans, and I was offered a kicker slot. After my kicking session ended, we finished camp with LB drills and 1 on 1 RB vs LB passing. Even though we didn’t take the tour, we did have some time to drive around the campus and tour some of the athletic complex and the facilities are great. I’d like to thank God, the Nichols coaching staff/players and all campers for helping me become a better football player today!
It should be noted that my second tour to Nichols a week or so after FB camp, I met and toured with Head Track and Field Coach Makayla Norton. Coach Makayla offered me a thrower slot, but she’s no longer the head coach.
Training update 16AUG25.
Going forward I will be training with professional kicking coach Sam Lenson and kicking/punting twice per week until the ground freezes in November here. We are planning to build a covered 8’x10′ artificial grass kicking area with a net so I can kick during our five months of severe winter. After the thaw next spring I will resume kicking on turf 3 times per week until college starts.
Training update 24NOV25.
Update 24NOV25: Good news! I have received permission from the school district to place kick inside one of our gyms over the winter!
2025 NEHS Showcase [Goffstown NH 07DEC25]
I checked in for camp on time, stretched and then did group warm-ups. We did the pro-combine [broad jump, 20y shuttle and 40y dash] and my broad jump improved to 86″. I forgot to ask what my 40 and shuttle times were [Update 10DEC25: 20y shuttle was 5.0sec]. After the combine, there was time to get in some warm-up kicking which was good because it’s been a few weeks since I was able to kick as the ground is frozen in Berlin. Coach Lenson had a large group of kickers to work with today and we were pressed for time, but I was able to pick up some good tips from him and work on my technique. After I nailed a 58yard kick off, I think Coach Lenson was happier than I was! I’d like to thank God, Coach Braine, Coach Lenson and all of the other St As coaching staff/players and all campers for helping me become a better football player today!
VTSU at Castleton Second Tour, Official Football Visit 9JAN26.
My dad and I drove down Thursday evening 8JAN26 through heavy fog on I-91 [foggy all the way to White River Junction] before arriving at the hotel in Rutland. Friday, we worked through some issues with admissions and then toured the athletic facilities with assistant STC Kyle Ouillette. At the end of the tour, I was surprised to find a jersey with my #12 on it in a Spartan locker, but THERE IT WAS!!! We then went in and talked football with OC Zach Brehmeyer for an hour or so and I was offered a kicker slot, no redshirt and on the travel squad! Thank you God, the Spartan coaching staff and Coach Lenson!
It should be noted that my first tour to Castleton was on 8MAY25 where we met and toured with Head Track and Field Coach Ian Sawtelle. Coach Ian offered me a thrower slot, no redshirt and on the travel squad as well.

A few PSU Football stats: *2025 MASCAC Co-Champs, 8W – 2L. *Head Coach Castonia – 2025 BSN Coach of the Year. *PSU Football Ranked 30th out of 241 NCAA Div 3 Schools. *Football had the most representatives on the (MASCAC) fall-winter All-Academic team, with a program record 13 seniors inducted into the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society. I drove mom’s Toyota down early Saturday morning with pop riding right seat. The sky was clear and the sun was up. The road was slick, but DOT were out plowing/salting. It was minus 22F windchill. We arrived early to Prospect Hall, and met briefly with HFC Castonia when we checked in, and then we were followed by about 20 or so other players with their families at 10:00am. LB Coach Sal Giglio stopped by our table and we talked about PSUs 4-2-5 defense for a few minutes. Coach Castonia introduced his coaching staff and discussed admissions, academics and finances for about an hour. We then took a tour of dorms and then met back up at the conference room. Coach Castonia talked about football recruiting, about being a team player, weightlifting, spring football and time management. We watched a PSU football hype video [Pop mentioned he liked it when they ran a counter speed option for a touchdown]. We had a lunch break, and the cafeteria had a large selection of different food. We had chicken tenders and fries and the quality was excellent. After lunch, Coach Castonia had several football players come down and talk with all of us prospects one on one at our tables. I had a goodtime talking and learning about the football program and PSU in general. We then toured the ALLWell North facility, the football stadium and the varsity weight room (wow). I thank God, Coach Castonia/staff and student athletes for hosting us today!
There are roughly 1.1 million high school kids playing football. Only 6% are chosen to participate at the collegiate level and I’d like to be one of them!
